homogeneous, and now showing changes Americans should watch carefully as Ireland is bound up with our bloodlines, tourism, culture, universities, and business. Of course, no broad conclusion should be drawn from any single incident.

So, let’s not do so.

Let’s look instead at statistics for two crimes Americans have learned over the last few years are disproportionately connected to recent immigration surges: attacks on women and fraud. Both have increased dramatically in Ireland since 2022, when migrant asylum claims there began to surge.

First, rape.

The official rape number in Ireland rose from 917 recorded rapes in 2021 to 1,016 in 2025. That is an increase of 99 recorded rapes - almost 11%. Adjusted for population, that increase would be the equivalent of roughly 6,300 additional recorded rapes in the United States.

Irish officials and advocacy groups have tried to soften the rise by suggesting that the higher numbers may partly reflect a greater willingness to report. That may be true. Or of course, it could just reflect the fact that more women are being raped. Either way, however, Ireland recorded 1,016 rapes in 2025 - which appears to be the highest single-year rape count in recorded Irish crime history.

Non-sexual attacks on women have also risen steadily since 2022, though at a slower overall rate of 2.3%. But a report last week showed that number has now spiked as well, with the first three months of 2026 up 8% from the same period last year. That translates to about 27 attacks on women a day. In a small country long regarded as safe, familiar, and welcoming, those are, as Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly stated last week, “absolutely shocking numbers.”

So here is the first conclusion: American tourists, American businesses, and American universities need to recognize that Ireland’s risk profile for women may now be changing. While it is clearly still safer than many places, it is no longer just a charming little place with pubs, churches, music, and Guinness. It now comes with an increased risk - no matter how officials attempt to soften the edges.

Then there is the other crime Americans have become all too familiar with from our own open-border disaster: fraud. And in Ireland, the fraud statistics are almost beyond belief.

<a class="image-link image2 Gardaí. Those numbers are tracked by the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

Between 2011 and 2022, the fraud statistics were reported by CSO as one combined category that included fraud reports by individual victims as well as fraud reported by banks and financial firms. During that period, the combined annual number ranged from about 4,900 in 2016 to about 17,500 in 2021 - with the period averaging roughly 8,000 fraud incidents per year.

In 2023 however, Ireland had to change the way they reported fraud claims because the amount of institutional fraud incidents exploded. The amount of institutional fraud was so overwhelming that the country simply did not have the ability to process them all. So, the government separated out the personal claims and continued to report those, but has not formally reported the amount of institutional fraud incidents since 2023.

Last week however, the Gardaí gave us a glimpse into the scope of the problem. They reported that in June 2025 the backlog of bank-reported institutional fraud incidents was approximately 140,000. That was just the backlog in June 2025 - that 140,000 figure did not include the claims the Gardaí had already processed between 2023 and June 2025. Considering the rate at which Gardaí state they are processing the incidents (almost 80,000 over the last year), it seems reasonable to assume the total figure of institutional fraud incidents between 2023 and June 2025 alone likely exceeded 200,000.

So Ireland went from an average of about 8,000 total fraud claims per year - roughly 24,000 over three years - to a figure likely exceeding 200,000 institutional fraud incidents in the three years since asylum claims spiked. That is more than an eightfold increase, or roughly 733%.

In response, Ireland is now considering legislation to “fix” the problem by relieving banks of their duty to report fraud incidents unless it is over a certain amount. In other words, the proposed fix is simply not to look.

The second conclusion is this: Americans - and American institutions - need to be extremely careful with any transactions involving Irish financial firms.

Is it possible that the increase in violence against women and fraud has nothing to do with mass migration? That would be an awful coincidence. The bottom line is this: An American woman is dead in Killarney, and the suspected fugitive is one of the nearly 60,000 asylum claimants who have entered Ireland since 2022. Rape reports since 2022 are up over 10%, while fraud is exploding through the financial system. And the Irish government’s answer is to tell everyone to squint their eyes.

This is not your grandparents’ Ireland anymore.

The Ops Desk is a reader-supported publication. Trump renewed his claim that Greenland “should be controlled by the United States, not by Denmark.” Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen immediately answered that Greenland is not for sale. Greenland’s foreign minister, Múte Egede, posted that Greenland’s future belongs to Greenlanders. So the fight is back out in the open. And this is not just Trump talking.

Back in January, Reuters reported that France, Germany, and other European allies were already working on a response plan in the event the United States moved on Greenland. Marco Rubio, meanwhile, signaled no retreat from Trump’s goal and declined to rule out military means. In other words, NATO allies were, at least at the planning level, gaming out what they would do if America tried to take territory from Denmark. That is how serious this has become.

The reason is geography and security.

Greenland sits between North America, Europe, and the Arctic routes to Russia. It is central to missile defense, space tracking, Arctic shipping, rare earth minerals, and control of the northern sea lanes. As the ice melts, that map becomes more important. Russia, China and the U.S. know this. Denmark has been slow to act like it does.

That is where the icebreakers come in.

Reuters reported last week that Russia has raced ahead in Arctic defense, modernizing the world’s largest icebreaking fleet, reopening old Soviet-era bases, and turning the High North into a serious military theater. The numbers: Russia has 42 operational icebreakers, some nuclear-powered. The United States has only two operational icebreakers. Across NATO, there are roughly 41 icebreakers, but Hudson Institute notes that 65% are past their design life; Statista puts the combined NATO figure at 47 icebreakers, depending on how the fleet is counted. NATO’s answer is “Arctic Sentry,” a stepped-up effort to convince Washington that Europe and Canada can defend the northern flank without the United States taking Greenland itself. But this will likely take years of investment and construction of icebreakers, submarines, drones, and satellites – not to mention deploying Arctic troops.

So while Trump’s message may be working to some degree to get Europe moving, the question is time. Is Europe moving quick enough? Can it?

In Greenland itself, nearly all major political parties support independence from Denmark; they differ mainly on how quickly they want to get there. They also differ on how aligned they want to be with Donald Trump, and this is where our previous reporting about the stalled genocide report comes in. As we reported in April, the human-rights report on Denmark’s forced contraception campaign against Greenlandic girls has become a controversy within Greenland itself, with some wanting this report released immediately and others fearing the impact on international affairs.

Aka Hansen, Chair of Greenland’s Siumut party, recently warned that if the report is being held back because of the Greenland-Denmark-U.S. fight, that is a scandal of its own:

If the reason for withholding it is a desire to prevent the United States from interfering in the relationship between Greenland and Denmark, then it is deeply worrying. Because then it shows that consideration for Denmark’s international position is being weighed higher than consideration for the Greenlandic population and the women who are still waiting for the report.

And now the reports have been delayed again, this time until the end of August.

In the interim, Denmark is trying to head off their human-rights reckoning with a compensation plan - effectively payoffs to the women. But like so much in Europe, that itself has now become bogged down in bureaucracy. After years of talk, a bill was finally introduced last week , with payments supposedly possible by September. No one is counting on that date holding. Whether this is more deliberate delay, or chronic (perhaps terminal) institutional arthritis, remains to be seen. of the old Convent of Mercy in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland on Sunday night. The Convent sat beside St. Patrick’s Church, in the town where tradition holds the body of Ireland’s patron saint is buried. No suspect has been arrested, but police confirm arson. Local leaders in the North are calling it heartbreaking, reckless, and an attack on a building woven into the town’s Catholic memory. The locals are saying what they have been saying for months: protect Ireland, protect the churches, protect the communities, and stop pretending this is just random disorder.

Asked for comment on the mosque burning, back in Dublin, the chairman of the Irish Muslim Council, states: “On numerous occasions, individuals have entered the mosque, live streamed worshippers on social media platforms, interrogated members of the congregation, and spread inflammatory and false narratives portraying Muslims as a threat to Irish society.”

Public reporting supports at least four attacks or attempted attacks on mosques or Islamic prayer centres on the island of Ireland since August 2024: Newtownards in Northern Ireland, Galway, Limerick, and now Dublin.

Official police reports also confirm 6 attacks on churches or chapels in Northern Ireland in Apr. 2025–Mar. 2026 alone. Separately, open-source reporting in the Republic identifies at least four church attacks in 2026: two arsons in Westmeath, the Tinure church arson, and vandalism at St Augustine’s in Drogheda. So that is at least 10 church attacks on the island.

The specific motives behind each of these attacks are not uniform. The mosque attacks are generally reported as “hate-related” with the Galway case showing the clearest connection to anti-immigration extremism. The church attacks, by contrast, cannot fairly be described as immigration-related, but are clearly biased attacks and demonstrate the widening religious and communal tensions on the island.

Ireland is clearly now the front line in the mass migration battle. The streets of Dublin filled last week with protesters pushing back against the EU Migration and Asylum Pact. Hundreds marched through the capital, waving Irish flags and protesting what they see as an open-border system being imposed from Brussels and protected by Dublin.

The politicians remain detached - condemning “hate”, warning against “speculation,” defending process, and rejecting any return to a hard border - while the Catholic Church, still one of the most powerful moral voices in Ireland, pushes back against any attempt to be more “firm” with migrants and border policy.

And over all of it continues to hang the ongoing Dublin trial of Riad Bouchaker, the Algerian man accused in the horrific Parnell Square knife attack on children outside a Dublin school. His lawyers this week are now asking jurors to ignore the people in the streets “shrieking for vengeance.” But outside the courtroom, the public mood is moving the other way. Ireland is no longer treating these events as isolated, and the temperature is still rising.

The Ops Desk is a reader-supported publication.
