News comes now that Marine Daniel Penny has been indicted in the death of vagrant Jordan Neely on a NYC subway. That was awfully fast.
Some questions one cannot help but ask:
What exactly are the charges?
Is the toxicology on Neely back yet? What did it say?
What about the other two individuals who appear to assist Penny? Are they indicted as well?
When exactly was the Grand Jury empaneled? For how long? Did they vote it out in one day?
Who is the Assistant District Attorney handling the case under Alvin Bragg? Was this a truly thorough investigation, in so short an amount of time?
As I stated in our Jordan Neely podcast (which I will re-post), this is one of those cases New York gets every now and then. A case that captures the currents blowing through the City’s civic life, and becomes, in a way, a landmark in New York’s history.
We’ve had them before: Kitty Genovese, Bernhard Goetz, Brian Watkins. This feels like one of those.
The Daniel Penny case will be with us for awhile, I suspect (depending on the charges). Penny has every incentive to fight this — his life behind bars, should he be convicted, will be at risk every day.
And the atmosphere in this town is likely only to grow worse.
I will withold further commentary until we know more. As of now, Daniel Penny is expected to be arraigned tomorrow (Friday) morning, 8 am. Expect a media circus — and a “not guilty” plea.
