Great article Chris. But you forgot the penultimate detective wannabe PO Levitt played by Ron Carey. Barney Miller is on AntennaTV, one of the retro channels. I happened to DVR the first and last episodes. Whoever picked the actors and wrote the scripts deserved a Commendation because, like you said they are in every squad room in every precinct in every city. I wonder who was the technical advisor from our Job?
Hill St Blues was more my age group, but we had watched Barney Miller with my dad.
Coincidentally, I flipped to a late night Barney Miller (I hadn’t watched in years) A woman had OD, so poison control told them to get her to vomit - they gave her Yemana’s coffee! Lol
The episode when someone brought in the pot brownies was a HOOT with Yemana singing! No one else could’ve portrayed Frank Lugar as effectively as James Gregory! He was my favorite.
I grew up watching Barney Miller & still watch it in reruns. Paul, after I first saw you on FNC , I remember thinking that you remind me of a real life Barney Miller…I mean this in the kindest way. Your background in law enforcement & having your law degree impressed me. My dad was a detective & my grandfather was a police Sargent, so I’ve always had a soft spot for LEOs.
Hill Street Blues for me. It captured the grit of the job really well. I was a member of the notorious class of '82 at PARTS (2,500 recruits jammed into the Academy downtown...oh boy...)

IMDb says the technical advisor was NYPD Lt. Paul Glanzman. Here is his information:

Thank you
I was a cop when the show first aired. I have the box set. Love the series.
